What Is Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Wisdom tooth removal is a common oral surgery procedure to extract one or more wisdom teeth, or third molars, which are the last teeth to develop and often cause problems such as pain, crowding, infection, or impaction. At Lafayette Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Group, Dr. Brett Henrikson performs wisdom tooth extractions to help alleviate pain, prevent future dental issues, protect surrounding teeth, and maintain overall oral health. How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom tooth removal is a straightforward process designed for safety, comfort, and efficiency. After administering local or general anesthesia, the surgical area is fully numbed, and the surrounding tissues are gently prepared. For impacted wisdom teeth, a small incision is made in the gum to expose the tooth and underlying bone. If needed, a minimal amount of bone is removed, and the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces to allow for easier, less traumatic extraction. Throughout the process, specialized instruments are used to carefully loosen and remove the tooth while protecting nearby structures. The extraction sites are then thoroughly cleaned to remove any debris, sutures may be placed to assist healing, and gauze is applied to help control initial bleeding. The procedure typically takes 45 – 60 minutes, and patients leave with detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and minimize the risk of complications.
What Are the Benefits of Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Wisdom tooth removal helps prevent current and future dental problems, improving both oral health and comfort. Benefits include:
- Reduces risk of crowding
- Prevents damage to nearby teeth
- Lowers the chance of gum infection
- Avoids cysts or tumors in the jaw
- Eases jaw pain or pressure
- Simplifies oral hygiene in the back teeth
What Can I Expect After Wisdom Tooth Extractions?
Recovery after wisdom tooth extraction varies depending on the position of the teeth and the complexity of removal, but most patients experience temporary swelling and tenderness that improves within several days. Bruising and limited jaw movement may occur early on and usually resolve as healing progresses. Our team will review personalized aftercare steps, including oral hygiene guidance and activity restrictions, to support a smooth recovery. Pain and inflammation are typically manageable with recommended medications and rest. Ongoing monitoring helps ensure proper healing and reduces the risk of post-extraction complications.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions Reviews
I had a wonderful experience getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday! I was very scared being put to sleep for the procedure since I never have been put under before. The team made me feel very comfortable and it was such a wonderful nap lol. It’s been a little over 24 hours and I have had very little pain. I would recommend them to everyone!
I needed all 4 wisdom teeth out. Wasn’t very pumped about it. But they had me out within 5 minutes of sitting in the chair (so no time to dwell on it) and I came too in the vehicle on the way home. Somehow, virtually no pain ever. I would describe it as discomfort at its worst. I kept anticipating the pain to come but it never did. They must do great work.
I was nervous about getting my wisdom teeth removed, but they made the whole process stress-free. The procedure was quick, and the secretary was so warm and professional. Great experience from start to finish!
I was very nervous going in for my wisdom tooth removal, but everyone made me feel so comfortable! Dr. Hendrix had my tooth out in maybe 30 seconds! His team made it quick and easy! I didn’t feel a thing, and was given very clear after care instructions :)
I must say from the time I walked in to my appointment until the time I was wheeled to my driver outside, what a wonderful experience. I had all 3 of my wisdom teeth removed 🙃. The surgeon and staff are professional, courteous and caring along with very clean in appearance and hygiene. My surgery was a difficult one because my wisdom teeth were not only majorly impacted and deep in my jaw bone which is quite hardened at 37 years old but the teeth ran against my nerve. The surgeon explained the possible complexity and complications that could arise from continuing, leaving me with the final decision. I chose to move forward as I felt I was in great hands and man was a right!!If you ever need to get your wisdom teeth removed, this is the place to go!! Just try not to wait 37 years to do it!

Am I A Candidate for Wisdom Tooth Extractions?
Often, wisdom tooth extractions are recommended for teens and young adults between the ages of 17 and 25, when the third molars begin to develop and shift. Not every patient will automatically need wisdom teeth removal, but leaving impacted wisdom teeth or crowded third molars in place can increase the risk of oral health complications, infection, and long-term alignment concerns. At Lafayette Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Group, our team evaluates each case carefully and may suggest third molar removal for patients who experience:
- Fully or partially impacted third molars trapped beneath the gumline or jawbone
- The development of a lump in the jaw or signs of a possible jaw cyst
- Gum bleeding, swelling from pericoronitis, facial swelling, or TMJ pain
- Tightly spaced teeth or crowding caused by wisdom teeth
- A lack of space for proper tooth eruption
- Deterioration of the wisdom teeth or difficulty keeping the area clean, increasing the risk of tooth infection or decay
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the ideal time for wisdom tooth removal?
Wisdom teeth are most commonly removed during the teenage years or early adulthood, often between the late teens and early twenties. At this stage, the roots are usually less developed, the surrounding bone is more flexible, and recovery tends to be faster and more predictable. Removing wisdom teeth earlier can also reduce the risk of complications such as impaction, crowding, infection, or damage to nearby teeth. From a timing standpoint, many families choose to schedule wisdom tooth removal during school breaks, summer vacation, or lighter activity periods to allow for adequate rest and healing. That said, there is no single “perfect” time that applies to everyone. Our providers evaluate age, tooth development, symptoms, and lifestyle factors to help determine when removal makes the most sense for long-term oral health and comfort.
Do you have to have all four wisdom teeth before scheduling extraction?
No, all wisdom teeth do not need to be fully present or erupted before extraction is recommended. In fact, waiting for all four wisdom teeth to appear is often unnecessary and may increase the risk of complications. Some wisdom teeth may be impacted beneath the gums or growing at an angle that puts pressure on nearby teeth, even if they are not visible yet. Our team evaluates each wisdom tooth individually using imaging and a clinical exam. If a specific tooth is likely to cause pain, infection, crowding, or future problems, removal may be recommended even if the others are not ready.
What should I do if my teenager is anxious about wisdom teeth extraction?
Dental anxiety is very common among teens, especially when facing a procedure like wisdom tooth removal. One of the most effective ways to ease fear is education. Our providers take time to explain what will happen before, during, and after the procedure in clear, age-appropriate language so there are no surprises. In addition to open communication, our team offers sedation options designed to keep teens relaxed and comfortable throughout treatment. A calm, supportive environment and compassionate care play a major role in helping patients feel at ease. Parents are also encouraged to ask questions so everyone feels confident and prepared ahead of the appointment.
